The Hervormde Kerk in Kesteren is the Protestant church of this village in the Neder-Betuwe municipality, in the Dutch river area of Gelderland. It stands on the Kerkstraat, and it is a working church, in regular use by its congregation, so it is not set up as a sight for visitors in the way a museum or a famous cathedral might be. Anyone who calls in should treat it as part of the life of the village, and respect that it is a place of worship above all.

The word Hervormde refers to the Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk, the Dutch Reformed Church, which was the main Protestant church of the country until it merged with other Reformed churches in 2004 to form the Protestant Church in the Netherlands. In the Betuwe, as elsewhere in the river area, Reformed Christianity has deep roots, and the villages have long had a strong church-going tradition, with congregations that take an active part in community life. The church is the place where the community gathers for services on Sunday mornings, for baptisms, weddings and funerals, and for activities such as choir practice, Bible study and youth groups.

The building reflects the Dutch Reformed tradition of simplicity. Reformed churches tend to have plain interiors, with a central pulpit and rows of pews arranged so that the congregation can hear the sermon, and little decoration, in contrast to the richly ornamented Catholic churches of the south. The congregation sometimes offers online services and sermons, as well as childcare during the Sunday morning service, which reflects how local churches have adapted to modern needs. Visitors who wish to attend a service are normally welcome, though they should check times and customs beforehand.

The village is a good base for exploring the surrounding area. Kesteren lies on the Nederrijn, the Lower Rhine, in the Betuwe, a region known for its fruit orchards, and the landscape of dikes, orchards and river meadows is ideal for cycling and walking. In spring, the blossom of the apple and pear trees is a major attraction, and in autumn the fruit is harvested and sold at roadside stalls. The towns of Rhenen, with its zoo and church, and Wageningen, with its university, are a short ride away.

The church suits visitors interested in village life and religious heritage and those passing through on a cycling tour. A visit from outside takes only a few minutes, and the setting is best enjoyed as part of a longer ride through the orchards.
