Family Amusement Park Koningin Juliana Toren

The Julianatoren is a family amusement park in Apeldoorn, in the province of Gelderland, named after Queen Juliana. It is a compact park, built for young children rather than thrill seekers, and it has been a regular outing for families in the middle of the country for many years. Its size is part of its appeal, as small legs do not have to cover long distances and parents can keep their children in sight.

Amusement parks aimed at younger children have a recognisable pattern. The rides are gentle, such as carousels, small roller coasters with modest drops, spinning cups, boats, trains and cars, along with play areas that offer slides, climbing frames and sandpits. Themed zones may bring in fairy tales, animals or Dutch scenes, and costumed characters wander through and appear in shows, which is a high point for the youngest. The age range is typically from toddlers up to around twelve, with height limits on certain rides, so it is wise to check the rules for each attraction before queuing.

Practical planning helps. Visits are much more enjoyable on weekdays outside school holidays, when queues are short, and in school holidays and sunny weekends the park gets busy with local families. Tickets are usually cheaper when bought online for a specific date, and children under a certain age often enter free. There are cafes and snack stands, and picnic areas where families can eat their own food. Waterproof clothing is useful on wet days, as many rides are in the open air, and sun protection is important in summer.

Apeldoorn has a good deal else to offer families. The Apenheul primate park, where monkeys roam free among visitors, is a major attraction nearby, and the royal palace of Het Loo, with its formal gardens, is another. The woods of the Veluwe are close, with walking and cycling routes, and the town has parks and playgrounds.

The park suits families with children aged two to twelve and is less rewarding for teenagers or adults without children. A visit takes three to five hours, and a few quieter rides allow grandparents to join in. Check the opening days and ticket prices before going, since the park may be closed for part of the year.
