Burgers' Zoo

Burgers' Zoo in Arnhem is one of the largest and best-known zoos in the Netherlands, and it is famous for the way it presents animals in large, realistic habitats. It was founded in 1913 by Johan Burgers, a farmer and entrepreneur, who began with a few animals in the grounds of his estate and developed a pioneering approach. He believed that animals should be shown in settings that resembled their natural surroundings, and that idea has guided the zoo ever since.

The zoo's modern identity is based on a series of huge themed halls, each of which recreates an ecosystem under a roof. Burgers' Bush is a tropical rainforest, with a warm and humid climate, a canopy walkway and free-flying birds, and it is home to primates, big cats and other jungle species. Burgers' Desert reproduces the dry landscapes of the Americas, and Burgers' Ocean is a vast aquarium with a tunnel, in which sharks, rays and tropical fish swim around visitors. A newer addition, opened in 2017, is the Mangrove, a walk-through tidal forest. The halls allow animals from different continents to be shown throughout the year, whatever the weather.

Outdoors, the park combines large enclosures with woodland, ponds and gardens. Visitors can see animals such as lions, bears, chimpanzees, elephants and a wide range of birds, and the layout allows enough space for walking and picnicking between the main sights. The zoo has a strong record in conservation, taking part in breeding programmes for endangered species and supporting projects in the wild, and information panels explain these efforts. Educational talks and feeding sessions are held regularly.

Nearby is Burgers' Safari, a separate drive-through or walk-through park where animals roam in large areas, and the Dutch Open Air Museum is also in Arnhem, together offering a wide choice for a family trip. The city offers its own history, including the Liberation Route and the historic centre.

The zoo suits families, school groups and animal lovers. It is a large site and can fill a whole day, with a strong programme of events. Check opening times and ticket options online, as prices and hours can vary by season, and consider booking ahead in school holidays. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a raincoat, as parts of the park are outdoors.
