Veghel

Veghel lies in the middle of North Brabant, on the Zuid-Willemsvaart, the canal that links Den Bosch with Maastricht and carried goods through the area from the 19th century. The town developed as a trading and manufacturing hub, with a strong agricultural base: the local farmers’ cooperative, known as CHV, was a major employer for decades. Today the town’s industrial heritage is reflected in its architecture and in repurposed buildings, many of which now house art galleries, creative studios and event venues. Since 2017 Veghel has been part of the municipality of Meierijstad, together with Schijndel and Sint-Oedenrode.

One of Veghel’s most notable attractions is the CHV Noordkade, a former industrial complex that has been transformed into a cultural and culinary hotspot. Visitors can explore contemporary art exhibitions, attend concerts and theatre performances, or sample local and international cuisine at the food halls and restaurants. The Noordkade regularly hosts festivals, markets and workshops, and it is a lively gathering place for locals and visitors.

The Chocolate Factory Veghel appeals to anyone with a sweet tooth, and the Service Bioscoop Industry offers a comfortable cinema evening. Golfers can play a round at a local course, and nature lovers can explore the forests and wetlands of the area.

Veghel’s town centre has a mix of historic buildings, modern shops and cosy cafes. Weekly markets and seasonal events bring the community together and offer a chance to sample regional products. The town is also known for culinary events such as food festivals and tastings, which show off Brabant’s gastronomic traditions.

The town also has a place in the history of World War II. In September 1944, during Operation Market Garden, American paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division secured the town and its bridges, and the road through Veghel became part of the supply corridor nicknamed Hell’s Highway. Memorials in and around the town recall those days.

Cultural attractions in the area include Heeswijk Castle, a castle with medieval origins just a short drive from Veghel, and the museums and galleries of the nearby cities of Eindhoven and Den Bosch. The central position of Veghel makes it a good base for day trips through North Brabant and beyond.

Getting to Veghel is straightforward by road, with good connections via the A50 and the N279. Regional buses link the town with surrounding cities, and parking is available for visitors arriving by car. The town is compact and easy to explore on foot or by bike, and rentals are available for those who want to see the countryside.

The best time to visit Veghel is from late June to early September, when the weather is warm and the outdoor events, parks and festivals are in full swing. Spring and early autumn also offer pleasant conditions, with blossom and fewer crowds.
