Swifterbant

Swifterbant lies in the middle of Flevoland, in the municipality of Dronten, on the Flevopolder, the largest artificial island in the world. The land was reclaimed from the IJsselmeer, itself part of the former Zuiderzee, and the village was founded in the early 1960s as one of the new settlements of the polder. Its name comes from the prehistoric Swifterbant culture, a Neolithic people who lived in the area thousands of years ago, when it was a river delta, and whose traces were found when the land was drained. The best time to visit Swifterbant is from late spring to early autumn, when the weather is mild and the countryside is green. The summer months are good for outdoor activities, cycling and enjoying the parks and lakes. Spring brings blooming fields and fresh air, while autumn offers colour and harvest festivals. Winters are quieter and can be cold, but the village’s cosy atmosphere and community events provide warmth through the year.
