Lingebos

Lingebos lies in the Betuwe, in the province of Gelderland, in the municipality of West Betuwe, close to Gorinchem and the village of Vuren. The Betuwe is the river region between the Rhine, the Waal and the Linge, known for its fruit growing and its farmland, and Lingebos is one of its places for leisure. It was laid out in the late 1960s as a recreational forest on land that had been farmland, and it has been developed since. The woodland is still young and consists mainly of oak, beech and birch planted to create a varied habitat. The forest is managed by Staatsbosbeheer, the Dutch state forestry organisation, which focuses on sustainable management and nature conservation as well as recreation.

The landscape is flat, typical of the river clay plains of the Betuwe, with gentle undulations and a network of waterways. The central feature of Lingebos is a large recreational lake, which is the hub of the area’s activities. The lake is surrounded by sunbathing areas, picnic spots and a kiosk, and it is popular with families and groups, especially in summer, when the swimming area is busy. The Children’s Beach is a shallow, sandy part of the shore that suits young children.

Children can also play on the forest’s adventure area, De Kleine Waterlinie, with a play fort on an island that can be reached by a small ferry, which lets them explore and play in a natural setting. The name recalls the Waterlinie, the old Dutch defence line that used controlled flooding, and the play fort picks up the theme.

The trails in Lingebos are well maintained and marked, with routes of different lengths and difficulty. The Lingebosroute is a popular hiking trail that circles the lake and passes through the forest, with views of the water and wildlife, and a short hike of about 4.2 kilometres makes an easy route for families. The area is also close to the Linge River, a winding river that offers more opportunities for walking, cycling and boating. Birdwatching is rewarding, with waterfowl on the lake and woodland birds in the trees.

The forest also supports many species of birds, mammals and plants, and the management includes maintaining clearings, managing water levels and controlling invasive species. The lake supports waterfowl and aquatic life, and the area is well known for birdwatching. In winter Lingebos is quiet, with possible frost on the lake edge and fewer visitors, while spring brings fresh green and flowers and autumn brings colour.

Lingebos works as a gateway to the Betuwe, since the surrounding countryside has orchards, windmills and historic villages that can be explored by bike. The area belongs to a larger network of recreational sites in the Betuwe, which includes other forests, lakes and nature reserves, and Gorinchem, with its star-shaped fortifications, is a short distance away.

Getting to Lingebos is easiest by car or bike, and it is well connected to the major cities of the Netherlands by road, so it makes an easy day trip. The Betuwe’s flat roads suit cyclists, and bus services connect nearby towns, so it is wise to check times.

The best time to visit Lingebos is from May to September, when the weather is warm and the lake facilities are active, though October brings colour and fewer visitors. The forest is open all year.
