2.6-mile Hike (Easy Route)

The Lingebos is a recreational forest near Vuren, in the Betuwe region of Gelderland, close to the fortified town of Gorinchem, and an easy hiking loop of about 2.6 miles, or roughly 4.2 kilometres, is a good way to see it. The route is flat, well marked and suitable for walkers of all ages, from families with young children to older people and casual runners. It is a modest outing, but it offers a break from the open polder landscape that surrounds it.

The forest takes its name from the Linge, a river that flows west through the Betuwe and reaches the Merwede near Gorinchem. The Linge is one of the few rivers in the country that still meanders freely through its valley, and the area around it has been developed into a green belt for recreation. Woodland like this is rare in the river area, where most of the land is open farmland, orchards and dikes, and a forest of this kind provides habitat for birds, small mammals and insects as well as a place for people to walk.

The loop trail follows paths that run between trees, meadows and water, with only a slight climb of around twenty metres overall, so it is more of a stroll than a hike. The surface is mostly firm, though it can be muddy after rain, and there are benches and viewpoints along the way. In spring the woods are fresh with new leaves and birdsong, in summer they provide shade, and in autumn the colours of the trees are a highlight. Dogs are usually welcome on a lead.

There is a children's beach in the area, which offers a place to play in the sand and the water and makes the outing more of a family day. Picnic spots are scattered through the forest, and bringing food and drink is a good idea since facilities are limited. The nearby town of Gorinchem, with its star-shaped fortifications, harbour and old centre, is worth a visit for a meal or a walk along the ramparts.

The route suits families, walkers and runners who want a short, easy loop. Wear comfortable shoes, check the weather and take care to keep to the paths. Allow about an hour for the walk, longer if you linger.
