Zaans Museum

The Zaans Museum is the museum of the Zaan region, the area north of Amsterdam around the river Zaan that became one of the first industrial districts in Europe. It stands on the Zaanse Schans, the open-air site of mills and traditional houses, and it opened in 1998 to tell the story of the region and the people who lived and worked there. The modern building, designed by the architect Wiel Arets, has a striking facade made of stacked and overlapping house shapes in the green and dark colours of the traditional Zaan houses, which makes it stand out among the older buildings.

The Zaan region was famous in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries for its wind-powered industry. Hundreds of windmills lined the river, driving saws, presses and grinders that processed timber, oil seeds, spices, paper and many other products, and Zaandam became a major centre of shipbuilding for the Dutch fleet. The wealth of the area supported a distinctive local architecture, and wooden houses painted in dark green were typical. Later, factories producing chocolate, biscuits and cocoa grew up along the Zaan, and the region became the home of well-known Dutch brands.

The museum explores this heritage through displays on industry, crafts and daily life. A key part of the exhibition looks at how the Zaanse Schans itself was created, and how the image of mills, green houses and clogs became a symbol of the real Netherlands for visitors from around the world. Visitors learn about the people who worked in the mills, the shipyards and the factories, and about the families who made fortunes. Collections of tools, models, paintings and everyday objects give variety, and the building offers views of the surrounding site from its upper floors.

The museum is also linked to a famous visitor, Tsar Peter the Great of Russia, who came to Zaandam in 1697 to learn about shipbuilding and lived for a few days in a small wooden house, which is preserved and can be visited. The story of the tsar in Zaandam is a popular part of the local history, and the museum presents it in the context of the shipbuilding industry. Nearby, the original Albert Heijn grocery shop, a museum shop, recalls the founding of the supermarket chain.
