Sint-Jozefkerk

The Sint-Jozefkerk, or Church of Saint Joseph, is a Catholic church in Zaandam, the main town of the Zaan region north of Amsterdam. It is part of the religious history of an area better known for windmills and industry. The Zaan river, which runs through the town and gives the region its name, flows into the IJ near Amsterdam. The Zaan region developed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as one of Europe's first industrial areas, and its population was largely Protestant, in line with the strong Reformed tradition of North Holland. Catholics were a minority, and after the Reformation they worshipped in hidden churches. When restrictions were lifted in the nineteenth century, Catholic communities built new churches in towns across the region, and many of them chose the Gothic Revival style, which was fashionable and associated with the Catholic revival. A Sint-Jozefkerk in Zaandam would belong to this tradition of parish churches, named after Saint Joseph, the patron of workers, which suited an industrial town. Catholic parishes also mark Saint Joseph the Worker on 1 May.

Inside, one can expect a calm interior with an altar, stained glass windows and devotional images, and the building may also be used for concerts and community events. The church lies in a town that has much to offer beyond it. Zaandam was the place where Tsar Peter the Great came in 1697 to learn about shipbuilding, and the small wooden house in which he lived is still there. The modern town hall and the Inntel hotel, with its facade of stacked, colourful houses in the Zaan style, are striking examples of contemporary architecture, and the waterfront promenade is pleasant. A short ride away, the Zaanse Schans offers the famous windmills, workshops and the Zaans Museum.
