De Hoope is one of the windmills of the Zaan region, the area north of Amsterdam around the river Zaan that was, in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, one of the first industrial districts in Europe. The mill is part of the Zaanse Schans area, the open-air museum and neighbourhood where historic mills and houses from the region are preserved. The setting explains why the mills matter.
The Zaan region had hundreds of windmills at its height in the eighteenth century, and they were not used for pumping water, as in other parts of the country, but for industry. They sawed timber for shipbuilding, pressed oil from seeds, ground grain, made paper and milled spices, pigment and mustard. The wind drove machinery that was ahead of its time, and the mills helped to make Zaandam a centre of shipbuilding, which supplied the ships of the Golden Age. Peter the Great of Russia visited Zaandam in 1697 to learn about shipbuilding and lived for a few days in a small wooden house that can still be seen.
The Zaanse Schans itself was created in the 1960s and 1970s, when old houses and mills threatened with demolition were moved to a site on the Zaan and arranged in a group. Visitors can walk along the water and see green wooden houses with white trim, windmills turning in the breeze and traditional workshops. Several mills are open to the public and demonstrate their work: a dye mill, an oil mill, a sawmill and a mill that grinds mustard seeds. The sound of the machinery and the smell of the products add to the experience.
Other sights on the site include the Zaans Museum, which tells the story of the region, a cheese farm where you can taste local cheeses, a clog-making workshop that shows how wooden shoes are made, and craft demonstrations of other trades. The Zaans Houten Huis and the Sint-Jozefkerk are close by, and the Zaandam waterfront promenade is within reach. It is the most popular destination outside Amsterdam, and the crowds can be heavy on summer weekends.
The site suits families, photographers and anyone who wants a picture-postcard Dutch scene. Visit early or late in the day to avoid the busiest times, and check which mills are open and how entry works, since some require a ticket. It is easily reached by train from Amsterdam and a short walk from the station.
