Utrecht University

Utrecht University is one of the oldest and largest universities in the Netherlands, and it shapes the character of the city of Utrecht, where students make up a large part of the population. It was founded in 1636, after the city's leaders decided that Utrecht needed a university of its own, and for nearly four centuries it has been a centre of research and teaching. Its buildings are spread across the city, from the historic centre to the modern campus on the eastern edge, and a few of them are open to visitors.

The most famous university building is the Academiegebouw, the Academy Building, on the Domplein beside the Dom Church. Built in the late nineteenth century on the site of the old chapter house of the cathedral, it is where graduation ceremonies take place, and its grand hall is used for official events. The Dom Tower rises next door, and the whole square is the ceremonial centre of the university. Visitors may be able to see parts of the building on open days or guided tours, and it is worth checking in advance.

The Botanic Gardens are another highlight. Utrecht University's gardens occupy the grounds of Fort Hoofddijk, a nineteenth-century defensive fort on the edge of the campus, and they form a surprising green oasis. The grounds include a rock garden, a tropical greenhouse, ponds and collections of plants from around the world, and the old fort walls and moat add atmosphere. A smaller historic garden near the Sonnenborgh observatory in the city was the university's original garden, and the observatory museum on its bastion shows astronomical instruments.

The university museum on Lange Nieuwstraat displays scientific collections, including anatomical models and instruments, and tells the story of the university's research. It is a good rainy-day option and is small enough to see in an hour. Throughout the year, the university organises lectures and public events, and student life gives the city a youthful buzz, particularly during the introduction week in August.

The university suits curious visitors, garden lovers and those interested in academic heritage. Combine it with a walk along the canals, a visit to the Dom Tower and a stop at the Centraal Museum. Check opening hours, as the gardens and museums operate seasonally and some buildings are open only on special days.
