Housed in the historic Maliebaanstation, a monumental building originally constructed in 1874, the Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht offers a fascinating journey through Dutch rail history. The museum’s origins trace back to 1927, when railway enthusiast Van Vloten’s private collection was first displayed by Dutch Railways. After moving to several locations, the collection settled in the abandoned Maliebaan station in 1951, officially opening to the public in 1954. Following extensive renovations between 2003 and 2005, the site now beautifully restores the 19th-century atmosphere while showcasing an extensive array of vintage steam engines, modern diesel, and electric trains.

This family-friendly destination provides an interactive experience where visitors can explore train interiors and learn about the significant impact of railways on society. It is an ideal educational spot for history buffs and tech fans alike. Practical planning is essential for a smooth visit. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, and also on Mondays during official Dutch school holidays, Easter, Whit, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Note that the museum is closed on Kingsday, April 27th.

Admission for visitors aged four and older is €19.50, while children three and under enter for free. NS employees pay a reduced rate of €10.00. Free entry is available for Museum Card, ICOM, VriendenLoterij VIP, and U-Pas holders, subject to specific conditions. Crucially, all visitors must reserve a free time slot online prior to arrival, regardless of ticket type. The museum is accessible by bus, train, bicycle, or car, though public transport is recommended during events and holidays due to limited parking availability.
