Sneekweek

Sneekweek is one of the best-known sailing events in the Netherlands, held every summer in and around the Frisian town of Sneek. The town lies on the edge of a chain of lakes, among them the Sneekermeer, and it has long been a centre for boating, regattas and watersports. For one week in the high season, the town turns its attention to the water, and the programme combines serious racing with a large public festival.

The sailing itself is the core of the event. Classes of boats from small dinghies to larger one-design yachts race on the lake, and competitors range from young sailors to experienced racers. The Waterpoort, a gate over the water dating from 1613, is the symbol of the town and one of the most photographed monuments in Friesland. The Frisian Shipping Museum tells the story of the region's boats and trade, and the Weduwe Joustra distillery is known for its local bitter, the beerenburg, a herbal spirit that is part of Frisian drinking tradition. The old centre has narrow lanes, canals and small shops, and boat trips run on the lakes.

Sneekweek suits sailors, young adults and families who enjoy a festival setting. Dates change each year but fall in early summer or late summer, and the official programme gives times and venues. Book accommodation and moorings well in advance, since the town fills up, and arrive early to find parking or, better, travel by train.
