Fries Scheepvaart Museum (Frisian Shipping Museum)

The Fries Scheepvaart Museum in Sneek follows Frisian shipping through the period from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. The museum is housed in old buildings in the centre of the town, and its collections are arranged so that a visitor can follow the changing fortunes of the province's seafarers and boatbuilders.

In the seventeenth century, Frisian ships and sailors were part of the booming Dutch maritime economy. Merchants from towns like Harlingen and Stavoren traded with the Baltic ports, carrying grain, timber and salt, and the province had its own admiralty, based in Harlingen, which supplied warships for the Republic. Many Frisian men served on the ships of the East India Company, and others went on whaling voyages to the Arctic, where the hard work and danger were balanced by high earnings. Ship models, charts, paintings and instruments in the museum illustrate this world.

The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries brought change. Trade patterns shifted, and some old ports declined as their harbours silted up, but inland shipping on the many waterways continued to thrive. Flat-bottomed barges carried peat, clay, bricks and farm produce to towns around the province, and a whole culture of working boats developed, with its own styles and rigs. Steam power arrived and gradually changed the way ships were built and sailed, and the museum charts this transition with models and archive material.

In the twentieth century, much of the working sail disappeared, replaced by motor ships and trucks, but a love of boats survived in the form of pleasure sailing and racing. Sneek became the centre of Frisian water sport, and its summer regatta, the Sneekweek, draws crowds. The museum shows how the old and new traditions connect.
