Frisian Shipping Museum

The Frisian Shipping Museum, Fries Scheepvaart Museum, is in Sneek, the water-sports town of Friesland, in a group of historic buildings beside the canals in the old centre. Friesland is a province defined by water: lakes, canals, rivers and the coast of the Wadden Sea. For centuries boats were the main means of transport and trade, and the museum tells the story of that maritime heritage, from small inland craft to large seagoing ships.

Sneek is a lively place to visit, and the museum is easy to combine with other sights. The Waterpoort, a gate dating from 1613, is the symbol of the town, and the distillery Weduwe Joustra is nearby for those interested in Beerenburg. Each August the Sneekweek brings sailing races and festivities, and the harbour fills with boats. Canal tours and cycling routes explore the surrounding lakes.
