The Prison Museum Veenhuizen offers a fascinating and thought-provoking journey into the history of crime, punishment, and prison life in the Netherlands. Located in the village of Veenhuizen, the museum is set in a former penal colony and state prison, providing an authentic backdrop for its engaging exhibits. Visitors must book their visit in advance, ensuring a well-organized and immersive experience.
Inside, the museum features a range of historical displays, including original sleeping cages, a panopticon, and a modern cell block. Interactive exhibits guide you through the arrest, conviction, and imprisonment of five real-life criminals, offering a personal perspective on the justice system. The new “Listening Tour” called Paupers’ Paradise, created by Suzanna Jansen, brings the story of Veenhuizen’s residents to life and can be enjoyed on foot or by bike.
The museum is suitable for all ages, with special activities for children and plenty of hands-on elements. English-language audio tours are available free of charge, featuring historical figures who guide you through the exhibits and share their stories. Admission is €11 for adults and €5.50 for children under 12, with free entry for children under four. Free parking is available on site, and the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
