OERmuseum West-Drenthe

The OERmuseum West-Drenthe is a small museum in Diever, a village in the west of Drenthe, devoted to the prehistory and natural history of the region. The word oer means primeval in Dutch, and the museum looks back to the earliest times of the landscape and its inhabitants. It is located on the village green, called the brink, a typical feature of Drenthe villages, and it is a good stop for visitors interested in the deep past of this part of the Netherlands.

Drenthe owes its character to the Ice Age. During the Saale glaciation, about a hundred and fifty thousand years ago, a huge ice sheet pushed south over the northern Netherlands and left behind a landscape of sandy ridges, boulder clay and large granite boulders carried from Scandinavia. These boulders, known as erratics, were later used by prehistoric farmers to build the hunebedden, the megalithic tombs that are the most famous monuments of the province. Hunebed D52 is a nearby example, and the museum places such monuments in context.

The museum's displays show how people lived in the area after the ice retreated, starting with nomadic hunters of the Stone Age who followed game across a cold, open landscape, then early farmers who cleared forest and built permanent settlements. Archaeological finds such as flint tools, pottery and ornaments illustrate their daily lives. Natural history exhibits explain how the climate and vegetation changed, from tundra to forest to heath, and what animals lived in each period.

The small scale of the museum encourages unhurried browsing, and it is often popular with children, who enjoy the hands-on elements and the sense of discovery. Opening arrangements are seasonal, so check the website or local tourist office before travelling, since small museums in villages usually open only on certain days.

Diever lies on the edge of the Dwingelderveld National Park, one of the largest wet heathland areas in Western Europe, and the surrounding area offers excellent walking and cycling.
