Kinepolis is the Belgian cinema group that opened one of Europe's first large multiplexes in Brussels in 1988 and has since built a network of complexes across Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Spain and other countries. The Emmen branch brings that format to the Drenthe town best known for its zoo, offering a modern multi-screen cinema within easy reach of the centre. It is not a sightseeing destination in the usual sense, but a useful rainy-day or evening option.
The main reason a visitor might choose it is language. Dutch cinemas traditionally show foreign films in the original language with Dutch subtitles, and they reserve dubbing mostly for children's films. That means English-language releases are shown in English, which makes a night at the cinema workable for English-speaking visitors without any special planning. Family films are often offered in both Dutch dubbed and original versions, so check the programme for the version you want.
The halls follow the usual standards of the group: stadium seating, large screens and modern projection and sound. Programmes combine the latest international releases with Dutch productions and children's films, and larger Kinepolis sites often add special formats or event screenings. A snack bar sells popcorn, drinks and sweets, and tickets can normally be booked online in advance, which is worth doing for new releases on weekends and during school holidays.
Emmen offers plenty for the hours around a film. Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen is the area's main attraction, with animals from several continents displayed in themed zones, and it is a popular family day out. The centre has shops and restaurants, and Rensenpark offers green space, while Jungola and the Rimbula River suit families looking for more active play. Drenthe's countryside, with its heath, forest and prehistoric megalithic tombs known as hunebedden, lies nearby for those who want an outdoor day before an evening film.
A cinema visit works best as the closing event of a day in Emmen, particularly when the weather is poor or children need an indoor break. It suits families, film lovers who prefer original soundtracks and visitors who want a relaxed, familiar evening. Showtimes, versions and prices change weekly, so always confirm them on the operator's website or app before setting out.
