Jungola, Emmen

Jungola is one of the three themed worlds within Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen, the large zoo in the town of Emmen in the province of Drenthe. The three zones are Jungola, Serenga and Nortica, and each is devoted to a different part of the world: Jungola recreates a tropical rainforest, Serenga the African savannah and Nortica the Arctic north. Jungola is the one that brings visitors into a warm, green and humid environment.

The zone is arranged under a large roof, which means it is open throughout the year and the weather does not matter. Inside, visitors follow paths through dense planting that imitates the lush vegetation of the Asian and tropical rainforests. Waterfalls, ponds and rocks add to the effect, and the temperature and humidity are kept high to suit the plants and animals. Walking in from a cold Drenthe day, you feel as if you have travelled across the world.

The animals living in the rainforest zone include primates, birds, reptiles and other species that thrive in tropical habitats. Enclosures are designed to mimic natural conditions, and in some places the barriers are discreet, so that animals can be seen at close range. Information panels explain the animals' behaviour and the threats faced by rainforests, such as deforestation and the trade in wildlife. Feeding times and keeper talks offer more insight.

There is a boat trip on the Rimbula River in the same zone, which carries passengers through part of the jungle and past wildlife, giving a different perspective. Combined with the other themed areas of the zoo, a visit can take most of a day. Emmen also has a modern centre with shops, the Rensenpark for walks and the Kinepolis cinema for evening entertainment, so a trip can be extended.

The zoo suits families with children, groups of friends and animal lovers. It is a good choice in poor weather, thanks to the covered jungle. Wear light layers because the temperature varies between zones, and check opening hours, ticket prices and any special events on the official website before you go. Exploring on foot is the main way to see it. The zone's Southeast Asian theme runs through the planting and the buildings, and children enjoy hunting for animals in the foliage. Look up as well as ahead, because birds and primates often move overhead. The Netherlands has few places where you can feel this far from home so quickly, and the contrast with the cool Drenthe weather outside is part of the appeal.
