Rensenpark

Rensenpark is a green space in the centre of Emmen, the largest town in the south-east of Drenthe. Emmen grew rapidly in the twentieth century from a collection of villages on the Hondsrug ridge into a modern town, and the park reflects that history. It is associated with the early days of the town's zoo, which later moved and grew into the Wildlands Adventure Zoo on the edge of the town, and the old park land was reshaped as a public park with a new character.

Today it works as an urban park with a creative edge. Paths wind between mature trees and open lawns, and in places the planting is wilder, with flowers and long grass for insects. Sculptures and other artworks are scattered through the grounds, and some of the buildings and pavilions are used as studios, workshops and small galleries. This mix of nature and culture gives it a different feeling from the usual municipal park, and it often hosts exhibitions, small performances and community events, which the local council and cultural groups organise through the year.

For families, the park offers playgrounds and places for children to run around, and for adults it offers quiet corners with benches, shaded walks and picnic spots. People use it for lunch breaks, dog walks, jogging and gentle exercise, and in summer it fills up with groups on the lawns. Information signs explain features of the park and its past, which adds a layer of interest for those who like to learn as they walk. As the park is in the centre of town, it is easy to reach on foot from the shops and the station.

The surrounding town offers plenty to combine with the visit. The centre of Emmen has a pedestrian shopping area with cafes and restaurants, the Kinepolis cinema and, a short ride away, Wildlands, which is among the most visited attractions in the north of the Netherlands. Emmen is also the gateway to the hunebedden, the megalithic tombs of Drenthe, and the cycling routes across the Hondsrug and the peat landscapes are excellent.

The park suits families, walkers and anyone who enjoys a pleasant place to rest between sights. It is free to enter and generally open during daylight hours, but check local information about events and closures. A visit can take half an hour or an entire afternoon, depending on the programme. Spring and early summer show the park at its best.
