Kerk van Zandvoort

The primary church in Zandvoort is the Sint Agathakerk (St. Agatha's Church), often referred to locally as the Kerk van Zandvoort. Built in 1928 and designed by Pierre Cuypers jr., grandson of the Rijksmuseum architect, the church is a prominent example of the Amsterdam School style from the interwar period. It replaced an earlier neoclassicist church from 1854, which now serves as Theater De Krocht.

The building is characterized by expressive brick decorations, natural stone sculptures, and stained-glass windows in yellow and blue, the colors of Zandvoort. The interior features significant works by Lambert Lourijsen, including mosaics, stained glass, and ceramic reliefs. The church is dedicated to Saint Agatha, the patron saint of the Zandvoort parish.

After a thorough renovation in 2007, the church is fully in use for religious services. During the summer season, it is open to visitors on Saturdays, allowing guests to appreciate its architectural and artistic details. A summer exhibition titled ‘Waalse Kruisweg’ featuring Anto-Carte is currently on display. For travelers, the Sint Agathakerk offers a unique glimpse into early 20th-century Dutch ecclesiastical architecture.
