Jopie Huisman Museum
Museum of Frisian life through Jopie Huisman’s art
The Jopie Huisman Museum in Workum is a captivating tribute to one of Friesland’s most beloved artists. Located just steps from the town’s market square at Noard 6, the museum is housed in a modern, purpose-built space that beautifully showcases the life and work of Jopie Huisman (1922–2000). A self-taught painter, Huisman is celebrated for his deeply realistic and compassionate depictions of Frisian peasant life, everyday objects, and the landscapes of his native province.
Inside, visitors can explore a rich collection of Huisman’s paintings, drawings, and personal artifacts. The museum’s permanent exhibition is complemented by rotating temporary shows that reflect Huisman’s philosophy of empathy, simplicity, and respect for nature. A highlight of the visit is the free audio tour, available in English, Dutch, and German, featuring Huisman’s own voice and original interview excerpts that bring his art and worldview to life.
The museum is open daily from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, with free admission for children under 13 (who also receive a Jopie sketchbook), and €12.50 for adults. Museum Card and ICOM card holders enter free. Facilities include wheelchair access, a museum shop, parking, and a café for coffee or a light snack.
Whether you’re an art lover, a fan of Frisian culture, or simply curious about the stories behind everyday objects, the Jopie Huisman Museum offers an inspiring and heartfelt experience in the heart of Workum.
