Janskerk

The Janskerk, or Church of Saint John, stands on the Janskerkhof, a quiet square in the centre of Utrecht, and it is one of the oldest churches in the city. It was founded in the eleventh century, around the year 1040, by Bishop Bernold, who had a remarkable plan for the city. He arranged four churches in the shape of a cross around the cathedral, the Dom, so that Utrecht's holy sites formed a geometric pattern on the map. The Janskerk was the northern arm of the cross, and its position is a reminder that Utrecht was the spiritual capital of the northern Netherlands in the Middle Ages.

The cross of churches was a statement of religious and political power. Bernold, who was bishop at the time of the German emperors, wanted to make Utrecht a rival to the great ecclesiastical cities of the empire, and his building programme was a way of doing so. The five churches, the Dom at the centre and the Pieterskerk, Janskerk, Paulusabdij and Mariakerk around it, formed a sacred landscape within the city walls. The church has been rebuilt several times since, and the present building shows Gothic work of the late Middle Ages alongside later changes, with a plain but dignified character.

Inside, the church has a calm, spacious interior of the kind found in Dutch Protestant churches, as the building was adapted for Reformed worship after the Reformation. Visitors can look at the Gothic vaulting, the plain walls and the windows, some of which preserve old glass, and at memorials that record local history. The church is used for concerts and events, and the setting beside the Janskerkhof, with its trees and university buildings, adds to the atmosphere.

The church is open to visitors on a limited schedule, normally in the afternoon from Wednesday to Saturday, and entry is free, though donations are welcome. Check the hours before you go, as they may change for events and services. The visit takes around half an hour, and it is a good place for a quiet rest after the busier sights of the city.

The Janskerk lies within walking distance of the Dom Tower, the Dom Church, the Centraal Museum and the canals, and it is easy to combine with a stroll through the old centre. It suits visitors interested in church history, medieval Utrecht and architecture. The Janskerkhof also has cafes and a pleasant mix of students and locals.
