The Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk in Alkmaar is the city’s largest and most visited monument, serving as a Reformed Protestant church. Built in the Brabantian Gothic style, this medieval basilica is a significant architectural and artistic landmark. Although it is no longer used for regular church services, it remains open to tourists, particularly during the summer months.

Key highlights include two playable organs: the Van Covelens organ and the Van Hagerbeer/Schnitger organ. The interior also features a vaulted ceiling painting depicting The Last Judgement by Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen, a masterpiece of Northern Renaissance art. Visitors can appreciate the grandeur of the nave and the intricate details of the Gothic architecture.

Admission to the church is free, excluding special events, concerts, and performances. Opening hours vary by season. From March 27 to May 31, the church is open Friday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. From June 2 to September 12, it is open Tuesday through Sunday during the same hours. An exception applies on Sunday, April 12, when it opens at 12:00 PM. During the winter, the church is mostly closed. Visitors are advised to check current opening hours before visiting, as exceptions may apply. A virtual 360-degree tour is also available online for those unable to visit in person.

For travelers, the Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk offers a profound cultural experience, complementing other Alkmaar attractions like the Waagplein. It provides a quiet space for reflection and an opportunity to engage with Dutch religious and artistic heritage. The church’s central location makes it an essential stop for anyone exploring the historic center of Alkmaar.
