Cheese Market (Kaasmarkt)

The Alkmaar Cheese Market (Kaasmarkt) is a historic tradition held on Waagplein, the city’s main square. Recognized as Holland’s cheese city, the market’s origins date back to 1365 when Alkmaar gained weighing rights, with the first documented market occurring in 1622. The event takes place every Friday from the last Friday in March through the last Friday in September, running from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Visitors witness a centuries-old ritual where traditional cheese carriers, dressed in historical costumes, transport wheels of cheese to the Waag (weighing house). Each carrier carries up to eight cheeses, known as a "berry," weighing 13 kg each. The market begins with the ringing of a bell at 10:00 am, followed by traders negotiating prices. The event concludes with cheese loaders throwing the wheels onto carts for transport, a dramatic display of skill and strength.

In addition to the Friday markets, evening cheese markets are organized during the summer months, specifically every Tuesday in July and August from 19:00 to 21:00. "Cheese girls and boys" are available to provide information about the city and market traditions, enhancing the visitor experience. The market attracts thousands of international visitors annually, offering a tangible connection to Dutch culinary heritage.
