De Hoop Mill

De Hoop, or Korenmolen De Hoop, is a traditional windmill in Alkmaar, the North Holland city best known for its cheese market. Alkmaar sits on the edge of the polder landscape, and the mills in and around it recall the long period when wind power pumped water, ground grain and sawed timber in the Netherlands. A grain mill like this one turned the local harvest into flour for bakers, and its sails and gallery are one of the details that give the town's skyline its character.

Windmills in Holland developed over several centuries, and the grain mill, or korenmolen, is among the oldest working types. The miller turned the cap to face the wind, set the sails according to the strength of the breeze, and adjusted the stones to produce different grades of flour. A visit to a working mill gives a sense of how much craft and judgement went into the job, and many mills have volunteer millers who explain the mechanics to visitors.

The mill is in Alkmaar, where most visitors start with the weekly cheese market in front of the Waag on the Waagplein. The nearby Stadhuis, the Drommedaris tower, the Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk and the Oudezijds Haven are all within walking distance, and the canals of the historic centre make for a pleasant stroll. The mill adds a rural, working note to a town that is otherwise known for its trading and its handsome gabled facades.

Beyond Alkmaar the landscape invites exploration by bike. The Beemster polder to the south is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, laid out in the early seventeenth century in a strict grid of fields, roads and ditches, and the area is dotted with farms and mills. Cycling there is easy, flat and scenic, and it gives context to what a mill was for. The Schermer polder and the dunes near Bergen are other options within reach.

Check the official website or ask the Alkmaar tourist office before you go, since the mill is not always open to the public and visiting arrangements, any tours and milling days vary through the year. If the doors are closed, it is still worth a look from the outside, and it can be paired with a day in the city and the surrounding polders.
