Grote Kerk (Great Church)

The Grote Kerk of Tiel, the Great Church, is the main medieval church of this old town on the Waal river, and its tower is a landmark for miles across the Betuwe. Tiel is one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands, an early trading settlement that later became a Hanseatic city and a regional centre for fruit growing. The church reflects that long history, and it has been a central point in the life of the town since the Middle Ages.

The building is a Gothic structure of brick, with a tall tower, buttressed walls and large windows. Like most Dutch churches of its age, it became Protestant after the Reformation of the sixteenth century, and the interior was stripped of its medieval altars and images and rearranged for preaching. What remains is a bright, spacious interior with high vaulting and wooden furnishings, a simple but impressive setting. The plain walls, the proportions and the light are the main pleasures here, more than elaborate decoration.

The church is no longer used only for worship. Like many large Dutch churches, it is open for concerts, exhibitions and community events, and visitors can sometimes join guided tours or climb the tower when it is open. Opening arrangements change with the season, so it is worth checking locally before planning a visit, and summer is usually the best time to find the doors open.

The surroundings add to the visit. Tiel's old centre has streets of historic houses, market squares and the quays along the Waal river, where large cargo ships and river cruise vessels pass. The Flipje and Streekmuseum, named after a local mascot, tells the story of the regional canning industry and the history of the Betuwe, and the town is closely linked to fruit: the annual Fruitcorso, a colourful parade of floats decorated with fruit and flowers, takes place in the Betuwe in September, and the Appelpop is another local symbol. The Betuwe countryside, with its orchards, is especially beautiful in blossom time in spring.

The church suits visitors interested in medieval architecture, local history and quiet places. It also makes a good starting point for a walk around the old town and along the river. Allow about half an hour for the church itself, longer if there is a concert or a tower climb, and combine it with the museum for a fuller picture of Tiel.
