Fruitcorso

The Fruitcorso is a parade held each September in Tiel, the main town of the Betuwe, the fruit-growing region between the Rhine and the Waal. It is one of the most colourful events in the Dutch calendar, and it draws large crowds from across the country. Floats and walking groups are decorated with fruit, flowers and other produce from the surrounding orchards, and the procession winds through the streets of the old town in front of cheering spectators.

The event celebrates the harvest and the identity of the Betuwe, which has been a fruit-growing region for centuries. The fertile river clay is ideal for apples, pears, plums and cherries, and the orchards that surround Tiel are famous for their blossom in spring. In late summer, the fruit is picked, and the festival marks the end of the season. It started as a local harvest festival in the twentieth century and has grown into a large event, with hundreds of volunteers working for months to prepare the floats.

The floats are the highlight. Each is built around a frame and covered with thousands of pieces of fruit, flower heads and plant material, pinned or glued in patterns to create pictures, figures and scenes. Themes vary from fairy tales to current affairs, and the best creations are works of art in their own right. Marching bands, dancers and costumed groups accompany the floats, and the atmosphere in the streets is festive. It is wise to arrive early to secure a spot with a good view.

Tiel has other attractions that make it worth exploring. The Flipje and Regional Museum tells the story of the local fruit-preserving industry and its mascot, Flipje, a cheerful figure who became a symbol of Tiel and the Betuwe. The Grote Kerk, the Great Church, rises over the centre, and the Waal river, with its busy shipping, is a short walk away. The Appelpop, a decorative apple figure, is another local emblem.

The Fruitcorso suits families, photographers and anyone who enjoys a colourful spectacle. Check the date and route in advance, as the details change from year to year, and use public transport if possible, since streets are closed and parking is limited. Bring a hat or an umbrella, depending on the weather. Tiel’s corso is one of the colourful events of the Netherlands’ calendar and the Netherlands’ biggest fruit parade.
