Fort Bourtange
Star-shaped 16th-century fort with moat and ramparts
Fort Bourtange, located in the province of Groningen, is a remarkable star-shaped fortress with a rich history dating back to the late 16th century. Originally constructed during the Eighty Yearsβ War, the fort was designed with angular bastions and a moat filled with swamp water, making it nearly impregnable. Its strategic defenses famously repelled Spanish forces even before completion, and later withstood a siege by Bishop Bernard van Galen, known as Bommen Berend. The story of Captain Prott, who refused a bribe of 200,000 guilders and declared, β200,000 bullets you can have!β is still celebrated today with annual battle reenactments.
Today, Fort Bourtange is fully restored to its original appearance, complete with ramparts, moats, and striking red drawbridges. The fort remains a living village, with residents inhabiting historic buildings such as the old school, church, and windmill. Visitors can explore walking routes through the fortress and its scenic surroundings, discovering shops, cafes, and a traditional candle-making workshop along the way.
Throughout the year, Fort Bourtange hosts lively markets, historical reenactments, and other events that bring its storied past to life. The fortress is open to wander freely, while the museums within have set opening hours. A visit here offers a unique glimpse into Dutch military history and the daily life of a fortified village, all in an atmospheric and well-preserved setting.
