AquaZoo

AquaZoo is the zoo of Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland, and its name tells you how it is organised. Water runs through the park in the form of ponds, streams and canals, and many of the enclosures are built around it. The aim is to show animals in surroundings that reflect where they live in the wild, and for those of the water, from penguins to otters, this works well. The result is a family attraction with an easy, green layout, and a good choice for a day out in the north.

The collection includes several dozen species from different parts of the world. Large and small mammals, reptiles, birds and fish share the park, and the display makes good use of the water for animals that swim or wade. Penguins and other water-loving birds are always popular, and big cats and crocodiles bring a touch of drama. Paths wind between enclosures and over bridges, which makes the visit feel like a walk through a park rather than a march along a corridor of cages.

One feature that appeals to younger children is the dinosaur display. Life-sized models are scattered along a trail, and children can look for them and learn a few facts about the creatures. There are also play areas, including water play and climbing equipment, where children can burn off energy between animal visits. This mix of animals and play suits families with small children especially well.

Through the day, keepers give talks and feedings, which are a good way to learn about the animals and about conservation. A timetable is usually available at the entrance. The zoo has a restaurant and picnic areas, so it is easy to spend several hours. Tickets can be bought online, often at a lower price, and a season pass is available for those who plan to return.

Leeuwarden has plenty to combine with a visit. The old centre has canals, the leaning Oldehove tower and the Fries Museum, and the shopping streets are a pleasure to explore, as is the Frisian Agricultural Museum. The zoo suits families, school groups and animal lovers. Check the opening times and seasonal programme before going, wear waterproof shoes in wet weather and allow around three hours.
