Located at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 38, the Museum Amstelkring, also known as Our Lord in the Attic, offers a unique glimpse into Amsterdam’s history of religious tolerance. Built in the 17th century by wealthy Catholic merchant Jan Hartman, this canal house conceals a hidden attic church that served as a secret place of worship during a time when Catholics practiced their faith under Protestant dominance. The museum illustrates the era’s principle of freedom of conscience, allowing visitors to explore well-preserved living quarters, kitchens, and the remarkable attic sanctuary.

The museum officially opened on April 24, 1888, and has since become a popular destination for travelers seeking cultural context. Today, the historic church remains active, hosting Sunday mass and services on the first Sunday of the months from October to April at 10:45. Visitors enter through the antechamber, which serves as the reception area, before exploring the preserved interiors that reflect the daily life of the Hartman family.

Practical information is essential for planning your visit. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00, and on Sundays and public holidays from 13:00 to 17:00. Please note that the museum is closed on January 1 and April 30. While tickets are available on-site, online booking is advised to ensure entry. Holders of the Dutch Museum Card receive discounts. This site provides a quiet, educational experience, allowing you to walk through history while understanding the architectural ingenuity required to hide a full church within a narrow canal house.
