A'DAM Lookout

A'DAM Lookout is an observation deck on top of the A'DAM Tower, on the north bank of the IJ opposite Amsterdam Central Station, and it offers one of the best views of the city. The tower was originally built in the early 1970s as a research centre for the oil company Shell and designed by the architect Arthur Staal, and for decades it was a closed office building on the edge of the old Overhoeks district. It was later renovated and opened to the public, and the observation deck at the top has been a visitor attraction since the 2010s.

The journey begins at the ground floor, where a lift takes visitors to the top floor in about twenty seconds, accompanied by a light show. From the Skydeck, the platform is about a hundred metres up, and the view takes in the whole of the city: the canals and gabled roofs of the old centre, the harbour with its ships and cranes, the wide IJ with ferries crossing, and beyond, the green polders and the distant skyline of other towns on a clear day. The 360-degree view is a good way to understand how the city is laid out, with the canal belt curving around the centre.

For those who want an adrenaline rush, there is the swing called Over the Edge, which carries riders out over the edge of the roof and tilts them above the streets, on a platform that is said to be the highest swing in Europe. It is optional and costs extra, but it is a memorable moment. An interactive exhibition downstairs explains the history and culture of Amsterdam, and there is a bar and a restaurant in the building, as well as a revolving restaurant higher up.

Getting there is half the fun. A free ferry leaves from behind Central Station and crosses the IJ in a few minutes, giving a view of the harbour from the water, and the landing is next to the tower. The surrounding district of Amsterdam North has changed quickly, with new restaurants, the EYE Filmmuseum and a lively waterfront.

The Lookout suits couples, families with older children and anyone who wants a panoramic view. Choose a clear day, and consider going near sunset for the best light. Check opening times and ticket options online, and book in advance to avoid waiting.
