Oss on a Cold Day
Oss is a mid-sized town in North Brabant, about 10 to 15 minutes by train from 's-Hertogenbosch. It is a working town rather than a tourist centre, best known for its industrial history: margarine production started here in the 1870s with the firms of Jurgens and Van den Bergh, which later became part of Unilever, and the meat processor Hartog created the Unox brand in Oss. What that means for a visitor on a grey day is a compact, unpretentious centre with plenty of places to sit down with something warm, and prices generally lower than in the bigger cities.
Café Cunen at Museum Jan Cunen
A good place to start is Museum Jan Cunen, just two minutes' walk from Oss station. The museum is housed in Villa Constance, a 19th-century villa, and shows 19th-century and contemporary art alongside the story of the town in a permanent display called Villa Curiossa. Its café, Café Cunen, has a terrace for warmer days and makes a calm spot for coffee and cake, with or without a museum visit.
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00 and closes on Mondays and during exhibition changeovers, which in 2026 include 2 to 14 November. The Museumkaart is valid. Exhibition texts are in Dutch, so a translation app on your phone helps.
Around the Heuvel
The Heuvel is Oss's central square and the place where most cafés and brasseries cluster, with terraces that fill on sunny days and covered or heated seating in cooler months. Brasserie La Colline on the Heuvel serves coffee with something sweet, lunch and dinner, and has a terrace that is heated in cool weather. Several other café-restaurants on and around the square offer similar menus, so it is easy to wander and pick one that looks inviting.
The nearby shopping streets, including the Walstraat and the Kruisstraat, have lunchrooms and bakeries where you can sit in for a sandwich or pastry. Opening hours in Oss, as in most Dutch towns, are shorter on Sundays and Mondays, and many kitchens close for the afternoon between lunch and dinner.
What to Order in a Brabant Café
If you are new to Dutch cafés, a few classics are worth knowing:
- Koffie verkeerd. Literally "wrong coffee": coffee with plenty of warm milk, similar to a latte.
- Warme chocolademelk met slagroom. Hot chocolate topped with whipped cream, the standard cold-weather order.
- Appeltaart met slagroom. Deep Dutch apple pie with whipped cream, served almost everywhere.
- Tosti. A toasted ham and cheese sandwich, cheap and filling at lunchtime.
- Erwtensoep (snert). Thick pea soup with smoked sausage, often on menus in winter.
- Worstenbrood. The Brabant speciality: spiced minced meat baked in bread dough, sold in bakeries and served warm.
If you head to nearby 's-Hertogenbosch, try a Bossche bol, a large chocolate-covered choux pastry filled with cream, from the city's bakeries.
Indoor Things to Do Between Cafés
Oss does not have a long list of attractions, but there is enough for a relaxed half day:
- Museum Jan Cunen for art and local history, as above.
- De Groene Engel, the cultural venue on the Kruisstraat, hosts theatre, music and children's performances. Check its programme for afternoon and evening shows.
- Shopping along the Heuvel, Walstraat and Kruisstraat, with cafés never far away when the rain sets in.
For a larger museum or a longer day out, 's-Hertogenbosch is a short train ride away, with its cathedral, the Noordbrabants Museum and the Jheronimus Bosch Art Center.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Oss is on the railway line between 's-Hertogenbosch and Nijmegen. The centre is a short walk from Oss station.
- Paying: Most cafés accept debit and credit cards and contactless payment; a few smaller places prefer debit cards.
- Tipping: Service is included in Dutch prices. Rounding up or leaving a few euros for good service is appreciated but not expected.
- Check before you go. Independent cafés change hours and occasionally close, so check current opening times online before making a special trip.
