West-Vlieland Village

West-Vlieland is the name of a village on Vlieland that no longer exists in the form its name suggests, and understanding that is the key to the place. Vlieland is one of the Dutch Wadden Islands, between Texel and Terschelling, and today it has a single village, Oost-Vlieland, in the east. The name West-Vlieland recalls an older settlement in the west of the island that was lost to the sea, swallowed up by storms and shifting sands in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, after which its people moved to the eastern settlement and the island took on its present shape. The drowned village is a reminder of how the Wadden Islands move over time.

The islands are made of sand and are constantly reshaped by wind and water. Vlieland has been losing land in the west and gaining it in the east for centuries, and the sea that took West-Vlieland also changed the island's whole form. Visitors who come looking for old thatched houses in a western quarter will not find them. What they will find is Oost-Vlieland, a small, quiet village of roughly a thousand people, with a main street, cafes, restaurants, a few shops and a small museum, set among dunes and woods, and the surrounding island, which is almost entirely car-free.

The village has the character that most visitors want. Narrow streets are lined with low houses, many of them of brick and some with traditional features, and the pace is slow. The Vlielander Museum and the Vlielander Kerk, the church, give some of the local story, and the lighthouse stands above the village. Cycling is the main means of transport, and the paths lead through the dune reserve, to the beach on the North Sea side and across the flat landscape to the west, where the old village once stood. A large sand plain at the western end of the island is used by the military and is closed to the public at times, so check before heading that way.

Vlieland is reached by ferry from Harlingen, in under two hours, and it is a good destination for a quiet holiday, with wide beaches, birdlife and views of the Wadden Sea mudflats, where guided walks are available. The Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and seals can often be seen on the sandbanks. Nearby are the islands of Terschelling and Texel.

The island suits walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers and those who want peace. Book accommodation and ferry tickets in advance in summer, and bring windproof clothing.
