The ferry terminal at West-Terschelling is the main point of arrival on Terschelling, one of the Dutch Wadden Islands, and it is the starting point for most visits to the island. Ferries run from Harlingen, on the Frisian mainland coast, and the crossing takes roughly two hours on the conventional boat or less on a fast one, with the operator, Rederij Doeksen, offering several sailings a day in season. Timetables, journey times and ticket prices change with the season and the weather, so they should always be checked directly before travelling, and booking ahead is wise in summer and holidays.
The terminal is functional rather than a sight, but the arrival itself is part of the experience. The crossing gives views across the Wadden Sea, where seals can sometimes be seen on sandbanks and gulls follow the boat, and the island appears gradually on the horizon, with the tall red-and-white Brandaris lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses in the country, standing above the town of West-Terschelling. Passengers who bring a bicycle can wheel it off the boat and start riding, and a bus service meets the ferries for those who do not.
The terminal is also a link between islands. Boats connect Terschelling with neighbouring Vlieland, so travellers can combine two islands in a single trip, and there are seasonal connections with Schiermonnikoog on other routes, which can make an island-hopping holiday possible. Because Vlieland and Terschelling are close together, the short hop between them is popular for day trips, though it depends on tides and timetables.
Terschelling itself has a great deal to offer. West-Terschelling has a lively harbour, cafes and restaurants, the church of West-Terschelling and the Natuurhistorisch Museum Terschelling, and the Vuurboei Museum is a small museum about the lightships and buoys of the coast. The island has wide beaches, dunes, forest and a famous cranberry harvest, and it hosts the Oerol festival of outdoor theatre in June. The Oude Vuur, the old lighthouse, and De Oerd, the nature area at the eastern end, are other places to explore.
The terminal suits anyone planning an island visit. Arrive at least thirty minutes before departure, carry your ticket and bike reservation, and dress for the wind. The ferry ride itself is a pleasant start to a holiday and a good moment to watch for seals and birds.
