Terra Maris

Terra Maris, located in the former orangery and carriage house of Castle Westhove in Oostkapelle, is Zeeland’s museum dedicated to the region’s unique natural environment and landscape. The name “Terra Maris” means “Land of the Sea,” reflecting the museum’s focus on the ever-changing relationship between the sea and the people of Zeeland. Exhibits explore how villages have been shaped—and sometimes swallowed—by the encroaching sea, offering insight into local maritime history and daily life along the coast.

Inside, visitors can discover displays on the plants and animals native to Zeeland, as well as aquarium exhibits that highlight the region’s aquatic life. The museum also features a reconstructed motte-and-bailey castle, built in medieval style, providing a hands-on glimpse into the area’s historical defenses and settlement patterns.

One of the highlights is the museum’s garden, which showcases characteristic Zeeland flora and offers a peaceful space to wander and observe the local landscape in miniature. Terra Maris is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, though it’s a good idea to check ahead for any changes on holidays or special occasions.
