Oostkapelle Beach

Oostkapelle Beach lies on the Walcheren peninsula in Zeeland, on the North Sea coast, and it has a reputation as one of the quieter and more relaxed family beaches in the province. A long stretch of wide, gently sloping sand runs between two protected dune and forest reserves, De Manteling in the west and Oranjezon in the east, and the beach is backed by dunes and woods that give it a more natural feel than many of the busier resorts along the Dutch coast. Wooden groynes cut across the sand at intervals, and rows of small beach cabins add to the picture.

The beach itself is simple and pleasant. The sand is fine and the slope into the water is gradual, which makes it suitable for young children, and there is plenty of space for building sandcastles, flying kites and playing games. Beach pavilions provide food and drink in the season, and lifeguards patrol at the main access points in summer, but the water is the open North Sea, with currents and tides, so parents should always keep an eye on children. Dogs are allowed on certain stretches at certain times of year, and rules change, so look for signs.

The dunes behind the beach are a big part of the appeal. The two nature reserves are crossed by walking and cycling paths that lead through dune valleys, scrub and woods, where you can see rabbits, deer, many kinds of birds and, in spring and summer, wildflowers. De Manteling and Oranjezon are managed to keep the dune landscape varied, and it is easy to combine a morning on the beach with an afternoon walk or cycle ride. Terra Maris, a nature centre in the village, provides information about the dunes and the coast, and Molen D'Arke is a historic windmill in the area.

Oostkapelle itself is a small village a short distance inland, and the surrounding area has the facilities that families look for: playgrounds, indoor play areas, mini-golf, wellness centres and a wide choice of accommodation, from campsites to hotels and holiday parks. Zeeland is known as the sunniest province in the Netherlands, and Walcheren has a mild coastal climate, which adds to the attraction. The nearby resort of Domburg, with its golf course and its link to the painter Piet Mondrian, is a short ride away, and Middelburg, the provincial capital, is a pleasant day trip.

The beach suits families, couples and anyone who prefers a quiet seaside day to a lively resort. Go in the morning or late afternoon in summer for fewer people, and bring a windbreak, as the sea breeze can be strong.
