The Stadhuis van Breda, located at Grote Markt 38, is a historic administrative building with roots dating back to the 13th century, coinciding with Breda’s grant of city rights. The current structure is a composite of four distinct buildings: the original town hall, the Cleijne Raedthuis, Huize Vogelsanck, and the Liggend Hert, added around 1680. After being destroyed by fires in 1490 and 1534, the building was rebuilt and unified under a sober 18th-century facade designed by Philips Willem Schonck.

Historically, the Stadhuis served as the center of local governance and justice until the late 19th century, when judicial functions moved to the Breda Courthouse. Today, it stands as a significant architectural landmark on the main square, surrounded by other historic buildings. For visitors, the interior is generally not open for regular public tours. However, access is provided during Open Monumentendagen (Monument Days), typically held in September, when the building is open from 11:00 to 17:00.

The site features a wheelchair ramp for accessibility, though pets are prohibited inside. The exterior offers a clear view of the classical facade, providing insight into the civic architecture of the era. The Stadhuis complements other attractions in Breda, such as the Castle and the Grote Kerk, by highlighting the city’s administrative history. Its location on the Grote Markt makes it a central point for exploring the city’s heritage. A visit during Monument Days offers a unique opportunity to inspect the interior details and learn about the building’s evolution. Otherwise, the exterior remains a prominent feature of the square, reflecting Breda’s long-standing role as a regional center.
