Breda Jazz Festival

The Breda Jazz Festival is a free four-day music festival held in the southern city of Breda every year over the Ascension Day weekend, in May or early June. It began in the early 1970s, and it is regarded as one of the oldest and best-known jazz festivals in the Netherlands. It is centred on the Grote Markt, the main square in front of the great church, but stages and venues are spread over the old town, so the whole centre takes on a festive character.

The festival opens on Ascension Day, a public holiday on a Thursday, and runs until Sunday evening. Music starts in the early afternoon and continues until late, with performances on outdoor stages, in cafes and in other venues. The line-up draws artists from the Netherlands and abroad, ranging from traditional and swing jazz to modern, fusion and world music, and the festival has long been known for making room for emerging musicians as well as established names. The atmosphere is informal, with people sitting at terrace tables or standing in the square with a drink.

Entry is free, which is part of the charm. The organisers rely on sponsors, volunteers and donations, and visitors can contribute by QR code or by the Dutch payment system iDEAL. The model has kept the festival accessible, and it attracts a mixed audience of all ages, from jazz fans to families passing through. It is popular with locals, and Breda's cafes and restaurants put out extra tables for the occasion. Because it is so busy, accommodation in the city can be hard to find at short notice, so it is wise to book early.

Breda is a pleasant city to visit. The Grote Kerk, with its tall tower, dominates the square, the Kasteel van Breda is a seventeenth-century castle that houses a military academy, and the Prinsenhof, the old residence of the princes of Orange, stands nearby. The Broek district has narrow streets, old houses and a quiet atmosphere, and the cathedral of Saint Anthony is close. The festival fits well into a weekend in the city.
