St. Agatha's Monastery

Sint Agatha in Deventer is a monastery with a garden that visitors can enter and a collection of heritage materials connected with monastic communities. It spread across the Netherlands and Germany, and it influenced figures from Thomas a Kempis, who studied in Deventer, to the young Erasmus.

The city's schools were among the best in northern Europe, and its church life was rich. Many religious houses stood within the walls, some of which survive in altered form, and the traditions of study and prayer left a lasting mark. A surviving religious house is a rare thing in a country where the Reformation closed most of them, and it reflects the persistence of communities of faith in difficult periods.
