The site associated with the martyrdom of Saint Boniface lies just outside Dokkum, a small town in the north of Friesland, and it is one of the most important places in the early Christian history of the Netherlands. Boniface was an English monk, born around 675 in Devon, who became the great missionary to the Germanic peoples and is often called the Apostle of the Germans. He reorganised the Church in what is now Germany, founded the abbey at Fulda, and is remembered, among other things, for felling a sacred oak of the pagan god Donar. In his old age he returned to Frisia to continue the missionary work he had begun as a young man.

He was killed on 5 June 754, near Dokkum, together with a group of companions, said to be around fifty. According to the traditional account, a band of local people, probably pagans in search of treasure, attacked the camp where Boniface was preparing to confirm new converts. He is said to have forbidden his followers to fight and to have held up a book of the gospels to shield himself from the blows. His body was taken to Fulda, where it rests in the cathedral, and the place of his death became a destination for pilgrims, a role it still has today.

The site is quiet and low-key. A monument and a memorial chapel mark the area, and the nearby Boniface Park offers a peaceful space with signs that explain the events of 754 and the missionary's life. There is no large visitor centre or museum at the spot, so the experience is mostly one of atmosphere and reflection. In Dokkum itself, further points of interest include the Boniface Fountain, which according to legend marks a spring that appeared where he was killed, and the Boniface Church. A long-distance pilgrim route, the Bonifatiusroute, links Utrecht with Dokkum, and many walkers finish at the site. The site is freely accessible all year, and commemorative events are held, notably around the anniversary in June.

Other things to see in the area include the Bolwerk, the ring of ramparts around the old town, and Museum Dokkum, which covers local history. The local breweries offer a place for refreshment, and the surrounding Frisian countryside is flat, open and good for cycling, with villages and churches on mounds across the fields.

The site suits pilgrims, history lovers, walkers and cyclists, and anyone interested in the early Middle Ages. It is a short visit of half an hour, and combines well with the Bolwerk walk and a coffee in the town.
