Museum Dokkum

Dokkum is a small, fortified town in the north-east of Friesland, and it has a history out of proportion to its size. It is one of the Eleven Cities of the famous Frisian skating tour, and it is traditionally linked with the death of Saint Boniface, the English missionary who was killed nearby in the year 754 while preaching to the Frisians. The town's star-shaped ramparts, still outlined by moats and green bastions, show that it was also a serious military place in the age of gunpowder.

Museum Dokkum is housed in part of the old Admiralty building, a seventeenth-century structure from the time when Dokkum served as the seat of the Admiralty of Friesland. The Admiralty was responsible for the navy's ships and supplies in the northern provinces, and the building reflects that role. It is a handsome piece of civic architecture, with brick walls and a dignified facade, and part of the visit is simply seeing how a naval administration lived and worked.

The museum collection covers the history and daily life of the town and the surrounding region. Visitors can see paintings and old photographs, Frisian pottery and silver, items from household and craft traditions, and traditional clothing that reflects regional identity. The displays also tell stories about trade, shipping and the way the landscape changed as the sea retreated and the old waterways silted up. Dokkum was once much closer to the open water, and the exhibits help to explain how it came to be an inland town.

Outside, the town offers more to explore. The ramparts, known as the Bolwerk, make a pleasant circular walk, with views over the water and the roofs. The site associated with Boniface's death lies a short distance from the centre, and a modest monument and a spring commemorate the event, which has been an object of pilgrimage for centuries. The town also has local breweries and a handful of cafes along the canals.

The museum suits history lovers, families with older children and anyone exploring Friesland beyond the larger cities. A visit takes an hour or two, and it combines well with a walk around the ramparts and a stop at a cafe by the water.
