Sint-Pancratiuskerk

The Sint-Pancratiuskerk is a church in Wijk bij Duurstede, a small town on the Lek river in the province of Utrecht, and it belongs to the town's medieval heritage. Pancras, or Pancratius in Dutch, was a young Roman martyr, said to have been put to death in the early fourth century at the age of fourteen. He became a popular saint in medieval Europe, especially in the Low Countries, where several churches are dedicated to him. His feast is celebrated in May, and he is traditionally invoked against perjury and as the patron of children and of those who suffer from headaches and cramps. A church with his name tells us that the community here had a Catholic past, and, as with most medieval churches in the Netherlands, it passed into Protestant hands after the Reformation, so its interior is likely to be plain, with whitewashed walls, wooden pews and a pulpit, though it may be used by different groups today.

The town has a village centre with a market square, a windmill known as Rijn en Lek, historic farmhouses, and a promenade along the Lek, where boats are moored and cyclists pass along the dike.
