De Biesbosch National Park (Nearby)

De Biesbosch is a national park in the south-west of the Netherlands, and it is described here as nearby Wijk bij Duurstede, though in reality it lies a good distance away, near Dordrecht, Werkendam and Drimmelen, more than an hour's drive south-west of the Lek river town. It is therefore a destination for a separate day, and visitors staying around Wijk bij Duurstede should plan for the journey. For those who want water close to Wijk itself, the Lek river offers boating and a promenade that give a taste of the Dutch river landscape.

The Biesbosch is one of the largest freshwater tidal areas in Europe, and it was created by disaster. In November 1421, the St. Elizabeth's flood broke through the dikes and drowned a large area of farmland and villages in the Grote Waard, and the land was never fully reclaimed. In its place, a maze of creeks, channels, islands and marshes formed, where the water level rises and falls with the tide even though the water is fresh, brought down by the rivers Rhine and Maas. People later used the area for growing willows, cutting reeds and fishing, and the willow coppices are still a feature. It was made a national park in 1994, and it covers several thousand hectares.

Wildlife is the main reason to go. The Biesbosch is home to beavers, which were reintroduced in the late 1980s, and otters, and it is an important area for birds, including sea eagles, spoonbills, kingfishers, herons and many waterfowl. In winter, large flocks of geese and ducks gather, and in spring and summer the willows and marshes are alive with songbirds. Seeing the wildlife is easiest from the water, and the best way to explore is by canoe, kayak or a small boat, or by joining a guided excursion on a quiet electric boat from a harbour such as Drimmelen, Werkendam or Dordrecht.

The park is open at all times, and there are no entrance fees, though boat trips and rentals are charged. Visitor centres in Dordrecht and Werkendam, including the Biesbosch museum, give information about the history and ecology, and walking and cycling routes cover the land areas. The weather changes quickly on the water, and tides affect conditions, so check forecasts and rules. Dress for wind and rain, and bring insect repellent in summer.
