Singraven is an estate on the river Dinkel near Denekamp, in the east of the province of Overijssel, close to the German border. It centres on a country house and a historic watermill, set in a landscape of meadows, woods and gardens shaped over the centuries by the owners and by the river. The Schuivenhuisje, a small sluice house, is one of the quieter features of the estate, and it belongs to the system that controlled the water used to power the mill.

The Dinkel is a lowland river that rises in Germany and flows through Twente before returning to the border region. It is known for its natural meanders, clear water and rich plant and animal life, and the valley is one of the most attractive landscapes in the east of the country. Estates like Singraven used the river both for beauty and for power, and a watermill depends on a steady and controllable flow of water. A sluice, called a schuif in Dutch, lets the miller raise or lower the water level, send it into the mill race or turn it away, and the little building that houses the mechanism is a schuivenhuisje.

This kind of structure is usually small, wooden and unassuming, but it reflects an exact knowledge of the water. Gates of wood or iron slide up and down in grooves, operated by a hand wheel or lever, and the sound of rushing water around them is part of the character of the spot. The setting among trees and the riverbank makes it appealing for photographers and painters, and it is a good place to pause on a walk. The interior is not usually open to visitors, so the exterior and the water are the main interest.

The estate has more to offer. The watermill at Singraven is one of the best-known in the Netherlands and is often open to visitors, with demonstrations of grinding or sawing when conditions allow. The grounds contain gardens and paths, and the estate is part of a wider network of walking and cycling routes in the Dinkel valley. Denekamp has cafes and restaurants, and the nearby villages of Dinkelland are pleasant to explore.

The spot suits walkers, cyclists, photographers and those interested in water management and mills. A visit takes about half an hour, and it fits naturally into a visit to the estate and mill. Check the estate's opening times, since access and events vary by season.
