Openluchtmuseum Marken

The Marker Museum, often referred to in the context of Marken’s heritage, serves as the primary institution for preserving the history of this former island village. Located at Kerkbuurt 44-47, the museum is housed in six interconnected historic wooden houses, offering an authentic glimpse into daily life on the island during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is not a separate open-air museum but rather an integral part of the village’s preserved architecture, allowing visitors to experience the charm of Marken’s traditional wooden houses and narrow streets firsthand.

The museum’s central theme is the unique Marker traditional dress (klederdracht), distinguished by rich embroidery and colorful fabrics. Specific patterns indicate the wearer’s life stage or occasion, serving as a visual language of community identity. Exhibits also cover local history, including fishing, religion, the struggle against water, and the changes following the construction of the Afsluitdijk. Displays utilize old photos, household items, and documents to contextualize these narratives.

For travelers, the museum provides essential background for exploring the village. It is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 from March 28 to September 30, and from 11:00 to 16:00 from October 1 to 31, with reduced hours on Sundays. The museum is closed from November 1, 2025, to March 27, 2026. Parking is available at the central lot upon entering Marken.
