Ferry service between Enkhuizen and Stavoren

The ferry between Enkhuizen and Stavoren crosses the IJsselmeer, the large freshwater lake that was once the Zuiderzee, and links North Holland with Friesland. The route is one of the oldest in the country, dating back to the late nineteenth century, and it offers a scenic way to travel between two historic towns. Because the crossing avoids the long drive around the lake, it has always been popular with locals, but it is also a pleasure trip in its own right, especially for those travelling with bicycles.

The trip takes about an hour and a half, and the ferry glides across the open water with wide views in all directions. A statue of the Vrouwtje van Stavoren, the widow of Stavoren, commemorates a legend about a rich woman whose pride led to her ruin, and it stands at the harbour entrance. Stavoren also has a fishing port, an IJsselmeer beach, pavement cafes and an old pumping station known as the J.L. Hooglandgemaal.

The ferry is mainly used by walkers and cyclists, which makes it a popular link in long-distance cycling routes around the IJsselmeer. Cyclists can ride along the dikes on both sides and cross by ferry to make a loop. The service generally runs in the warmer months, with a limited schedule at other times, so check the timetable and book ahead if you can, particularly at weekends and during school holidays.
