De Vuurtoren

Schiermonnikoog is unique among the Wadden Islands for having two lighthouses, both of which are Rijksmonuments (national heritage sites). The Noordertoren, or North Tower, is a red structure built between 1853 and 1854. It remains in active service, staffed 24 hours a day, and stands 37 meters high with a light range of 28 nautical miles. It features a rotating light installed in 1910. The Zuidertoren, or South Tower, is a white structure located just one kilometer away. Originally built to provide two fixed light sources for navigation, it was later used as a water tower from 1950 to 1992. Since 2018, it has been preserved and restored by the Stichting Behoud Zuidertoren.

Visitors can view both lighthouses from the surrounding paths and dunes. The Noordertoren is particularly striking against the sky, while the Zuidertoren offers a glimpse into the island’s engineering history. Although neither lighthouse is open to the public for interior tours, their exteriors are accessible and serve as prominent landmarks. The area around the lighthouses is part of the Schiermonnikoog National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich biodiversity.

For travelers, the lighthouses provide a tangible connection to the maritime history of the Wadden Sea. They are easily reachable on foot or by bicycle from the village of Oost. The proximity of the two towers highlights the evolution of navigational technology.
