Brothers' Cemetery

The Brothers' Cemetery in Oudenbosch is a small burial ground for the members of a Catholic teaching congregation, the Brothers of the Saint Louis Institute, and it is a quiet place with a strong sense of local religious history. Oudenbosch, in West Brabant, is known above all for its basilica of Saints Agatha and Barbara, a nineteenth-century church built as a close copy of Saint Peter's in Rome, and the cemetery belongs to the same world of devout Catholic life that shaped the town in that century. The graves lie at the back of the Saint Louis complex, and the burial ground is still used and treated with respect.

The story behind it starts with the founders of the institute. Pastor Willem Hellemons was the parish priest of Oudenbosch in the mid-nineteenth century, a man of great energy who was responsible for the building of the basilica, and with Father Vincentius Huybrechts he founded the teaching congregation that ran schools in the town and elsewhere. The brothers taught boys in the Catholic tradition at a time when the Church was reasserting itself in the south of the Netherlands after centuries of restriction, and the school became one of the best known in the region. Father Vincentius became the first superior of the congregation, and he is buried in the cemetery, which was established in 1890.

A monument at the entrance honours the two founders. It was donated by former pupils and carries medallions with portraits of the men, a typical form of memorial from the period that tells us something about the affection and gratitude felt for them. Rows of simple graves are marked with uniform crosses, and the plainness of the stones reflects the vow of poverty and the communal life of the brothers. The atmosphere is calm and contemplative, and some visitors regard it as a place of pilgrimage.

Visitors should behave as they would in any burial ground, keeping quiet, avoiding disturbance and checking that the gates are open, as access may be limited. It is not a sight in the usual sense, but it adds depth to a visit to the town. The basilica of Saints Agatha and Barbara, the Chapel Saint Louis and the Napoleon Chapel are the places that most visitors come for, and the town also has a museum devoted to the Papal Zouaves, young Dutch volunteers who served the pope in the nineteenth century.

The cemetery suits those interested in religious and educational history. A short visit takes fifteen minutes, and it can be combined with the basilica.
