This is a five-day spring festival across the bulb-growing towns and Haarlem, and its main event is a single long procession. On Saturday 17 April the floats, dressed in hyacinths and other spring flowers, travel 42 kilometres from Noordwijk to Haarlem, through the villages on the way.

Because the route is so long, you choose one spot and let the parade come to you. Covered grandstands with reserved seats are set up in Noordwijk, Voorhout, Sassenheim, Lisse and Hillegom, and Noordwijkerhout has one for the Friday evening illuminated parade. You can also watch from along the route, where there are cafe terraces.

Roads around any viewing point close two hours before the floats arrive and stay shut for two hours afterwards, so a car is the wrong tool for the day. The organisers point people to public transport, a bike or their own feet to reach the village centres. There's free parking in the surrounding area for those who do drive.

Combine it with a day at Keukenhof, which is open throughout the festival and is in Lisse, one of the viewing towns.
